Santa's List

My second post today is this 6 X 6 card using the Stamp set, Santa's  List. I stamped Santa, coloured him in using two different reds from the Stampin' up marker range.  I love these markers as you don't get the lines you get when you overlap the strokes as you get when colouring with normal felt tip pens.
I  then cut him out using a circular die.I cut out  black and red circles using various size dies to mount Santa on.
I  cut a circular frame in the gorgeous glimmer paper  from S.U.
Stamped and mounted my greeting and stuck it on using sticky foam pads to give a little more dimension.
The Holly sprig was from a cheap foam set of stamps square in shape. That I have owned for years,  but could never get on with until I cut it down to just the image.
Th embossed background created using  a Spellbinder double embossing folder. It has swirls and stars on one side and Christmas baubles on the other.

Christmas Lodge in soft suede

Today's posts are quick and easy  Christmas cards using the Christmas lodge from Stampin' up! This stamp set has been retired.
I distress the edges of all the images and inked them using a sponge dauber and soft suede ink.

The central panel of all these cards are pretty much the same,  the only things I have really changed are the backgrounds.
On the first card I used  Stampin' up's crumb cake DSP and soft suede card stock as the backing.

For the background of the second card I used soft suede card stock  stamped with a polka dot  background stamp and white craft ink and finished it off with a bow in soft suede ribbon and some dazzling diamonds glitter.
You just have to have glitter at Christmas.
The third and final card was even simpler.
I mounted the central panel onto gold card and and stuck that onto a piece of soft suede card stock which I had stamped using the  Serene  Snowflakes stamp set again from S.U and I am sad to say  this set has also been retired.
Again I used white craft ink to stamp the snow flakes.
The greeting was stamped onto a second scrap of whisper white card stock and cut to the length of the central panel and I rounded the corners with a non S.U. corner rounding punch.
I hope you like today's posts if so,  let me know by ticking one of the reaction boxes below or leave a comment.  Thanks  for visiting.

Faux Fire Place for Christmas.

My creation this week has nothing to do with card making or scrap booking. This is a prop for the Christmas play this year and you are seeing it before the cast and the rest of the school.

Made from five cardboard boxes. and a whole lot of paint and glue.

The two uprights are the boxes that the fadeless display board backing paper comes in. If you work in a school  you will know  exactly what I am writing  about
I mention this as so many Stampin' up! demonstrators work or have worked in schools.

The base is made from two similar shaped boxes  just a bit wider and stuck together end to end, a sheet of card was then glued over the top to conceal the join and to give a little more stability.

The two side boxes were glued into position with PVA glue and I placed weighty objects on the top of each box while the glue was drying

I then painted the inside of the inside faces a of the boxes black and the outsides a creamy yellow (using school acrylic paint.)
Once the  cream paint was dry,  I added  the brick work. This is easier and quicker than you may think. You just make a large brick stamp.

How to make the stamp Using a piece of fun foam  (available from any craft shop)

Cut a rectangle approximately   3 1/2 " x  5"     Using   double sided  tape stick the foam  in the centre of a piece of grey strawboard  which is three time the length of the foam,.... but the same width

At  each end the foam on the card....score a line .... turn the card over so the fun foam is face down on your surface and is place length ways across your surface.
Fold  both ends of the card back onto it's self .  these flaps  will be the handle.

Now in the centre of the two flaps score another line down the centre of both flaps ( the same as you did at each end of the foam.)

Fold  the card outwards on the new score lines  of the card.

Apply glue  to the whole length of these  flaps and stick  together,  The shorter flap at the end should  stick up in the air,  so when you look at the whole thing side on it looks like a  letter  T.

This sounds more complicated than it is and it should only take about 1 minute to make once you know what you are doing .... two if you don't.

When dry,  smear a thick layer of  brick coloured paint over a tray and use the stamp you have made  to pick up the paint and to apply the paint to the fire place  press firmly over the back of your stamp and lift off.

You don't have to use the whole stamp,  I used either one end or the other most of the time and you don't want a perfect solid impression every time.

Don't worry if you make a  a bit of a mess  or you get some paint missing from your bricks you can fill in the  big misses with a brush afterwards.

If you place your brick in  the wrong position either wipe it off  while it's still wet with some water and a cloth  ( because you used acrylic paint)  or wait for it to dry and  tidy it up later  with  your  base colour.

DO NOT fill in all the misses in the brickwork,  some  small misses help to give depth.

I found this a great way of getting my bricks fairly evenly placed and of equal size.
I think it took me less than twenty minutes to make the stamp and paint the bricks on and do the filling in. If I had done it by hand with a brush  it would have taken much longer and not looked as good.

The hearth of the fire I painted black and allowed to dry before spraying it diluted white acrylic paint . I used a bodyshop,  bodyspray  bottle to spray the paint on. These bottles are great as they deliver a very fine mist

On a large sheet of Grey strawboard  I painted the  outer edges of the board black and left the centre of the board blank until the black had dried as I didn't want the black paint mixing with the  bright colours of the fire and dulling them or worse  .... everything turning into a muddy mess.
It's important to use acrylics and not  school poster paints, as once the acrylic paint has dried it stays put. It is not re activated when it gets wet or by painting over it. I painted over lots of the black area s to create this fire.
Once  the  painted fire was dry, I applied  streak and dots  of PVA glue and sprinkled glitter in various colours over the glue to add a little sparkle.

When all was dry I added  a 1" wide line of PVA glue  to the  long sides  of the strawboard and then adhered the strawboard to the  back of the upright boxes, using a wall stapler and stapling the back panel to the back of the uprights this helps to keep the back panel in place while the glue is drying.

NB it's a good idea to measure the distance between the  the upright boxes before you glue them to the base box to make sure you will be able to adhere the back of the fire place to the back sides of your upright boxes.

The mantle piece  was a  cardboard box which I had removed the tape from the bottom and folded flat. Lucky for me this box  that looked as though it was going to be too short turned out to be exactly the right length once folded flat. I made use of the flaps that were already on the box to attach it to the back of the fire place, Before doing this  I cut off the flaps at the other end of the box scored a line across the width of the box the same depth as the uprights as this mantle has to fit over the uprights.

About  six inched out from this score/ fold  line,  I trimmed off the excess box. I now had a long narrow U shape  piece of card which can now be glued to upright side boxes. Apply lots of PVA to the top of the upright boxes and position the U shaped card upside down over the uprights making sure both ends are even and that your uprights are still upright and not listing. Add weight to the top of the mantle piece to help the keep contact between the glue and the card.
Paint the mantel piece and decorate as desired.
The grate was created by cutting strips of strawboard approximately 1 " wide and gluing and stapling together. I then screwed up balls of coloured paper and foil and placed them in the grate.
Here I have used green tinsel and the  Bow die from Stampin  up to create my double bows. the stockings were cut free hand and  stamped and heat embossed using the  serene snowflakes stamp set. the label on the stockings is from an old stampin' up set called gifted.

I don't have a fire place at home.... maybe I'll be bringing this one home for the season. I'll have to be quick because  a couple of other people have their eye on this piece too.

Gift Wrapping with Bigz Bow Die.

A very quick post on the Bigz Bow Die.
My sister wrapped up MY birthday present in the wrapping paper you see here.
I thought  it was too pretty to throw away so I have  recycled it by wrapping her birthday present in it, I figure she liked the paper enough to buy it for me so she'll love to get a present wrapped in it  :~)

There are some beautiful images on this wrapping paper.
That would make fantastic stamps sets.

I have added  a big bow to this parcel using  the long since retired Sage Shadow card stock. It seemed to go with this paper better than any other colour in my vast stock of card And the Bigz Bow Die from Stampin' Up!

First I cut 4 strips 3/4" wide and I inked the edges of the strips  slightly, then  the edges of the bow to make the card strips look as though it has the edges of a real ribbon.

I added the bow to the centre of my faux ribbons and using a hot glue gun I applied the shank-less button to the centre of the bow,  just for a little glitz.

P.S If you want to know what's in the parcel...... I 'll only say it's a new S.U. product she'll love using.

Two by Two Baby Card.

You may remember  a few months ago I did a very similar  card for  a boy.

I rather liked the finished look of that  so when a friends daughter gave birth to a baby girl last I was inspired to make it again in girly colours.
I have also changed the shape of the topper.
Last time, I used the Top Note die , this time I thought I would try the oval and scalloped oval. ( from Spell Binder.)
The  stamp I used is called Two by Two which is now retired.
I used SU 's markers to colour most of the animals and boat,  but I confess to using my Copic Markers to colour the  elephants.

I hot foiled the Grandparent Greeting on this card and added  some  Dazzling Diamonds glitter to the waves and the rim of the boat.

The DSP I use was pretty in pink and has unfortunately been retired now.

Amanda Fowler's Card

The postman brought this card this morning sent to me by Amanda Fowler along with  a  very posh inspiring inkee team badge.
I love the colours  Amanda has used here. They are not colours I have purchased .....yet!  But they could well be on my next order.
I don't yet own the Floral Flourish stamp set  (from SU) she has used here either. I have been umming and arhing over this stamp set for a long time now. I think this may now be on my  wish list along with the Flower Shop set.

Thank you Amanda for your card and the  posh badge and for making me want to spend even more money. hee hee.

Here is my badge.... the background is silver but it doesn't look it in this photo.

A quick look at the new Envelope Punch Board

At long last somebody has come up with a foolproof envelope board.  Yay!!

This is a must have item.

I have  a basic envelope board,  I bought many years ago, but I lost the instructions so I have never been happy using it.
I always managed to score the wrong lines. Sometimes even with the instructions.
So I was delighted  when I saw that SU were bringing out this Gadget..... I LOVE IT!

I was expecting it  to retail  around  the £25  mark.
So when I saw it was only £17.95 I  just had to buy it.
It makes,  making envelopes a cinch.

You get a paper version of the instructions in the box with the board, but what I love is that the instructions are also ON  the board, so if you do lose the paper instructions  you can still use your board successfully.

It tells you what size to cut your paper  for each size envelope and which measurement you need to score for the size of envelope you want.
You only need to measure where to put the first score line and punch out the corner, then you just turn your paper  round and line up your first score line with the little finger on the punch and score your next line and punch again.

You do the same on all four sides and fold and stick  ... and that's it.   SO EASY.

If you want a rounded  tips on the flaps you   put the tips of your envelope into the other side of the punch and just punch .

Nothing could be simpler.

This board even comes with a scoring tool that is neatly hidden away in it's own little slot under the board. You can see this on the right of this photo.

Envelopes are  not the only thing you can make with this board.

It's only been available  a few weeks and already there are some very clever ladies out there making other things with it.

I haven't chance to have a proper play yet.
I have been very busy making wedding invitations, but  now they are complete,   so maybe I'll get the chance to play,  once I have cleaned up the mess and made some space.

Envelope Punch Board Cracker.

Another project for the envelope punch board   which is the latest gadget from Stampin ' Up! is to make crackers.
I saw this on on an Australian Demonstrators website.  Tanya has a tutorial you can download free of charge for this project. Unfortunately for me  the tutorial  wouldn't download, so I ended up  figuring it out for myself. You may have better luck .

I will leave details of her website at the end of this post so you can view it for yourself.  I don't know how or if her tutorial differs from mine. But for now here's how I made it.
I used a piece of card stock 8 1/4"  X  6 1/2".  I  having been using whisper white card and the DSP to make these  crackers as I am  not sure if the punch could cope with two thickness of the plain coloured card which is thicker. I am a coward and really don't want to try it just in case I ruin my punch board.

I scored  the card length ways at 1  1/2"  intervals    which leaves you with a  1/2" strip  which is the Flap for the adhesive  Fold  all the score lines.
I folded the card to the first score line and placed the folded edge in the punch lined up to the 2" mark on the rule and punched .
I then opened it up an folded to the second score line and punched  again. I repeated this process until I had punched on every score line and on the edges of the cracker.

Then turned the card round and repeated the whole punching process again until both side matched.

Taking the cracker back to the score board I scored a line each side of the the punched holes.
Then folded the inside line in towards the centre of the cracker and the outside score line back. ( see the photo) This will help the cracker to keep it's square shape when you tie the ribbons round.

If you intend to stamp your cracker now would be a really good time to do it, While the card stock is relatively flat.

Here I have used to the Holly wheel wheel stamp to decorate this cracker, then added  red glitter glue over the berries.

One the glitter glue is dry, I will stick the edges together and tie ribbon around the punched lines which will draw the card in to give the cracker it's shape.

These two crackers are now ready for  the finishing touches.

Pretty Origami Box

Remember the origami basket tutorial I posted sometime ago. Well this pretty box is made in pretty much the same way until you get to the almost the end. when you have to fold down the handles as well  as the sides, and this has  a lid rather than a handle.
If I can find some time I will make another video tutorial on the making of this box.

This was made from a 12x12 sheet of DSP from SU. I think the colour is River Rock. It's not a colour I liked very much but I have to say I think it  looks great made into this box.
To make this box you will need two sheets of 12x12 paper and one sheet of co ordinating card stock.
Some narrow  lace and decorations of your choice and a hot glue gun.
I have been suffering with a dreadful cold for the last few days and lacked  the patience to make the flowers myself. So I chose to use  a few of the flowers I  purchased  some years ago but never got round to using.

You can just about see that  the bottom of the box has a reinforcing panel inside. As most the fold lines go through centre of the  sheet of card the base  can end up weakened. So the panel has been added for extra strength.
The side triangular panel decorations were made by punching a small hole through gold card,
Then taking a slightly larger punch and lining it up over the  smaller hole you have just punched and punch again . This gives you the gold frame.

With the larger of the two punches cut out  another circle in  your decorative paper, over stamp if you wish. I used the floral stamps from the Tiny Tags set of stamps.   When the ink was dry I then run a thin line of adhesive on the outer rim of the decorative paper , ( I used the two way glue pen.) line up your gold circle frame over the decorative paper and press firmly until  stuck.
The leaves were cut  using an assortment of punches and dies and  the edges were sponged to give  a little more depth to the creation.

In my last photo you can see the under side of the lid.
this was made by making a small shallow box the same size as the aperture in the  top of the base. Which in this case  was 8 1/2 cm  square.  So I cut a square   11 1/2 cm  X 11 1/2 cm scored all the way around the card at 1   1/2 cms  and made the box this was then glued in to the centre of the decorative panels. The First/ Bottom  layer measured 12 x 12 cms.
The next layer was 1/2 a cms less at 11 1/2 cms
The next layer was 2 cm less  at 9 1/2 cms
and the last layer being 1/2 cm less  at 9 cms .
You  don't have to use these precise measurement because  they don't really matter,  you do whatever sizes  you like.

Now for the filling....ummm  my friend Angie says  fill it with chocolates and use it as the centre piece of the table with coffee after a meal. Sounds like a wonderful idea to me.

But I think this one is nice enough for a wedding gift and I know just the person to receive it. Just need to find a  suitable wedding gift to fit in it.

Swallowtail Card

This is just a quicky as it's very late and I need to get some sleep.
When I got in from work today I thought I would have a leisurely look on You Tube and see if there were any video' s that might inspire me to get off my backside and in my craft room  to clean it up and get creating again.

Wow! was I in for a surprise I came across a video for making this card,  after watching it,  I immediately rushed upstairs and cleared a space on my work bench to have ago.
It was very quick and easy and I was pleased with the result. Why Not Pop over to You Tube and check out her videos for yourself.

The lady who made the video is called Brenda Keenan. (Keenan Kreations)
She has made a few videos and they are worth watching. Believe me.... She managed to get me off my butt and into my craft room after watching only one video .

I have since watched a few more of Brenda s videos  and I definitely  will be attempting to case several of Brenda's beautiful cards. But for now it's off to bed.

Baby Card Instructions.

Add caption
Okay, I have been asked for the instructions for this card so many times I thought I would  make it again. This time I would  photograph each step  so that I can share the instructions with you.
The original card was sent  to  the happy parents before I had even thought of writing down  the instructions.
This has taken several attempts to get it right and to make sure the instructions are as clear and concise as I can make them.
So here goes....
You 'll need a cutting mat and knife,
Scoreboard  useful
a metal rule,
a pencil,
adhesive of your choice,
1 sheet of A4 card.

Score the A4 sheet  exactly in half.   (land scape)

Turn card to portrait  and measure 3 cms from the top of  the card  and mark the 3 cms Do this twice about 7 cms in from the sides,  this will enable you to mark the ends of the cuttings line more accurately.
Repeat this at the bottom edge of the card.

Join up the markings length ways down the card and cut  the whole length of the lines
(See photo 2.)
In photo 4 you will see I have  numbered the strips 1, 2  & 3
Strip one is left as is... no work required on this yet.

Strip two is the centre panel that folds in on its self.

Working on the centre strip only.
Measure 3 cms  up from the bottom edge of the card score a line between the cutting lines only.
Measure 3 cms up from the last score line or 6 cms up from the bottom edge of the card score another line.

Repeat this process at the top end of the card.
 Both ends should match.
(See photos  3 & 4)

Clicking on any of the photos  should bring up a larger picture, which can also be enlarged if you want to inspect my photos closer.

On Photo 4
Red lines equal score lines.
Green lines equal cutting lines.

On photo 5

Strip three not terribly difficult to do  but measuring has to be accurate or it can go horribly wrong and it won't fold flat.

Measure 12 cms from the top & the bottom of the card  ( in portrait position) and score a line across  at 12 cm mark on one side  and a cutting line on the other.

NB. My  template has both lines marked as score lines  But one is a cutting line.

See Photo 6
you can see I have concentrated  purely on this section and have deliberately missed out some of the other score lines so  that they will not confuse.

On photo 6

From one end of the card  only  measure 13 cms and  mark it at each side join the the markings.
This is a cutting line.
In my photo this is the broken
line in dark blue.
This will be the adhesive tab.

OR you could just  Measure 1cm on  from one of the red score lines in this picture.

Cut away the section marked
and lightly fold  all the score lines.

Don't crease them in firmly yet
you may need to make minor adjustments which is easier to
do before using the bone folder.

When you are sure everything  folds flat and lines up add adhesive to the upper surface of the tab  and stick the front & the back of strip 3 together so the tab is inside the card.

Now you can use the bone folder to make all those score lines sharp.
This is important as it will help the finished card stand up.

The base card is now  ready for you to decorated any way you choose.

If you find this useful  please leave a comment.
I have spent many hours working this one out and I'd like to know how you get on with it better still I'd love to see what you do with it.
If you need further advice  please contact me through the hotmail address on the side bar.
Thank you

A couple of additional photos from different angles.

It's nicer if you decorate the inside too.
I suggest you decorate each panel in a different ways .  Trying to  do all the panels in the same paper may result in it looking like you didn't have enough paper or skill to cover it all in one. So vary the papers even if                                                                                     you stick to the same colour paper.

The unfinished inside of this card

I stamped greetings and flourishes on to one panel a verse on another,  the baby s birth details on another,  I left one panel  plain for the sender to write his greeting and added  pretty papers to other panels.

To do this one well takes a good deal of time... Don't rush it and
Have fun.

Giggle Greetings Card

This one was made for my 93 year old Mother-in-law  who loves  the colour green and has a fondness for cats.
She did laugh when she read this card.
Which goes to prove this  stamp set is suitable for all ages.
It's called Giggle greetings and  it's in the 2013/14  catalogue.
(It comes with three other humorous  stamps. See below)
to make this card I stamped the cat on to vanilla card stock and again onto  thin scrap paper. I cut the cat on the scrap paper applied some two way adhesive to the reverse of the scrap cat and allowed it to dry.
Once the glue was dry,  I  placed it over the cat I had stamped on the card to mask it .The purpose of this is to keep the cat clean when stamping the brick wall and sponging the grass area.

I inked up the brick wall stamp (which is one of the  Cover a Card range of stamps)  with creamy caramel ink ( a retired colour from SU) and  stamped  over the  top half of the cat.

To do the grass,  I used  Pear Pizazz  ink a sponge dauber and sponged in the grass  area then over stamped it  randomly  with a small grass tuft stamp using Old Olive ink pad.
Once the wall and grass area were completed I removed the mask from the cat.

The bushes were created using a small foliage stamp which  was stamped repeatedly until I was happy with the effect. I used a white gel pen and added some dots on the bushes to give the impression of flowers.

Black Magic Technique Box

Thought I would share this  little box I made to house my colour coach. I don't think I have ever used  my colour coach so it just gets chucked around the craft room and was starting to show signs of  wear and tear even though I never use it. So I decided to make a box to protect a little.

I used black card which I stamped  with  S U 's white craft ink. I  allowed it to dry completely  then coloured over the white flowers using the water colour pencils from SU.

I added white dots with a white gel pen after
I had finished the  colouring.

This technique is often called  the Black Magic Technique.

It's the perfect way to add colour to black or dark coloured card.

Glimmer Paper from Stampin' Up! My review.

I had no intention of buying Stamping Up s glimmer paper when it first came out.
But then I got sent a couple of sheets free of charge.
I shoved in my paper stack without really looking at it and forgot about it. I am not really a big fan of glitter papers.
But A couple of weeks ago  I was looking for some pretty paper to cover the pages of this mini album when I stumbled across it .
I threw it on my work bench along with all the other papers that might be suitable  for this project.

The sun was shining through my craft room window onto my work bench and the glimmer paper laying on the top of the pile.
The sparkle s coming from the glimmer paper really caught my eye. Diamond fragments sprung to mind and sparkly jewellery.
I  thought  this is no ordinary glitter paper and I felt compelled to dragged out a few sheets of glitter paper bought from a craft shop somewhere I can't remember .
Wow .... I was impressed  there was no comparison this Stampin' Up glimmer paper is very impressive,  I love the fact it is a very pale silvery white and the glitter doesn't come off on your hands while working with it.
So I thought I'd try die cutting it... it can't be perfect..... can it?
Well,  to my surprise It die cuts well,  (as you can see from the letters I have cut here).
So I have been converted.   I am now a fan of glimmer paper. The Stampin' Up kind that is.

I am afraid  it doesn't show up well in photo s and  this photo certainly doesn't do it justice.  You have to hold it in your hands to appreciate this stuff.

As for the Mini album..... That's incomplete at the moment but I will be sharing the pages when I have completed them.

Candy cane mouse

Some time ago I said I would re photograph and post the gift Sharon sent me..... I have finally got round to it so here it is , A  candy cane mouse Is'nt it gorgeous.
Sharon has the build a blossom punch which punches out several shape petals at a time, (see photo below)  two of which have been used here to create the ears.

The small heart punch and two of the circle punches have been used to create the eyes and nose. I am guessing she cut the oval out body out with scissors. I was delighted to receive this little chap in the post at a time when I was feeling a little down.

cards that impressed me

I have had a lot of time this week  since my injury to go looking at other people s blogs. Wow !!! there are some amazing ladies out there making wonderful cards.
Here are two that I found and had to have a go at making.
The first one doesn't show the  enbossing detail very well. So I will say  that the candles  sizes are about  1/2 " wide  X 3" long. I inked the edges with the same colour ink as the card. and placed them in an embossing folder before sticking them on to the white card. I punched 7 Bird wings  in yellow. Using the  bird punch from S.U.   and daubed some apricot appeal ink at the base of the flame.

This second card  Looked fantastic on the ladies blog but when I reproduced it  looked flat and to be honest very disappointing. So I took it all to pieces and inked the edges of all the circles and stuck it all back together. I was much happier with the result.     It  was created using three different size circle punches.

Sharon's little monkey

I have to share this little guy with you. He was sent to me  from Sharon. I thought he was gorgeous and he certainly made me smile when I opened the envelope. Which was Sharon s intention.
I haven't as yet  had a go making him myself as I found I didn't have all the punches needed. But that issue has now been rectified,  I just need to find the time. Half term has been extremely busy for me Sorting out my craft room turned into a mammoth job which has taken me the best part of the week.  I had this idea  that if I moved some  the furniture around  I would have more floor space and easier access to my craft room.......Having moved several large pieces of furniture and many plastic boxes I found I had boxed myself in and couldn't open the door enough to get out.  Now being stuck in my craft room  is not far off my idea of heaven,  the trouble is one needs to eat and use the bathroom from time to time and of course,  one needs to go work to pay for all the new craft stuff that you just can't live without.
Fortunately Hubby was off work that particular day and realizing my plight, he took the door off the hinges  so I didn't have to move everything back to get out..... Bless him.   He has re hung some cupboards  for me so I don't feel so claustrophobic .   I do have a little more floor space...... Gosh ! I may even be able to get two people in there now hee hee.
I still have a few cupboards to sort through and tidy but I am getting there, which is why I haven't done any crafting for a while.
I treated Hubby to  trip to the Cadbury's  World  (chocolate factory)  for his help. He is a bigger chocoholic than  most of the women I know so he enjoyed that.http://sharonscreativemoments.blogspot.co.uk
